I voted.
The only thing I am seeing on my Facebook page is my friends and acquaintances forwarding articles and commenting on the big Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden. I am in a lot of mental pain today, because of it. I have not voted in many years and the last vote I cast was in Germany. I just became a US citizen last year like many of you know.
My observation today feel like someone rubbing salt into an open wound. I have never cast any vote for anything that was not considered left. So marking anything that was labeled republican was painful to me. Like I had to physically force myself to color the box black. I voted by absentee ballot that I carefully drove to the nearest drop box. I did not trust USPS not to lose it.
There are a few odd observations. The envelop is signed, but not the ballot itself. Really? That is odd. How do I know that nobody is throwing my carefully colored in ballot away and replacing it with something to their liking?
My husband tried to pick up the ballot for his mom. He could not — not allowed — not even with guardianship and conservatorship papers. His mom moved to a residential facility and USPS forwarding does not work for ballots, so it went back to the Clerk’s office. She has to call the office to have it mailed (verifying that she is indeed the person she is by doing nothing but speak her name) or pick it up herself. While my husband was waiting, five people walked in to vote. They did with no one asking for an ID. Do you see the irony? An old lady cannot get her ballot unless she confirms she is herself by speaking her name, but an ID is not required…
What is even more concerning about the five people voting without showing their ID? They did not speak English. One person could not understand the person behind the counter at all; could literally not produce a sentence in English. Since I am fairly familiar with the citizenship process, I know for certain that there is an English speaking requirement and you are tested for that. How did this person pass? I know the test was very, very easy, but still. The other four people spoke English broken and poorly. They were clearly from South America and the Middle East.
When I received my citizenship, it was a large ceremony with hundreds of people receiving their citizenship with me, primarily people with an Arabic or Indian background. After the ceremony, voter registrations were handed out by a couple of women with short blond hair and glasses, and all of us filled them out right then and there.
I have accounts on various social media platforms. People that I consider friends follow me on Facebook. I follow them. I am a very inactive person on Facebook, since my own political awakening I cannot tolerate any conversation about politics there. This does not hinder my friends from doing so. This is why I learned that JD Vance is a sexist and wants all women to be chained to the kitchen. I also learned that Elon is an evil billionaire trying to buy the election. He is also an illegal immigrant as he violated his student visa by dropping out of college to start a business. I learned that Kamala is wonderful and we should be happy to elect our first black female president. Many do so for their daughters, because clearly daughters need a good female role model like her. I learned that Trump is solely responsible for all misery from how poorly COVID was handled to the open border because he personally alone blocked a bill that would have saved us all to the inflation, because he allowed his billionaire friends to price-gouge.
This morning I learned that there was a literal Nazi Rally in New York.
A L I T E R A L N A Z I R A L L Y
Of course chaired by literal Hitler. There were a lot of literal Nazis there doing literal Nazi things.
I do not know what to say anymore. My husband, who kind of woke up more this year is still trying to convince people to actually look at facts and not just one side of the story, is getting more and more disillusioned. The people he talks to show no interest in listening to the other side. They claim his sources are untrustworthy, but when pushed to answer what sources they believe are good nothing but CNN or MSNBC is named. Everything else is either a raging lunatic like Bret Weinstein or Elon Musk. Twitter is a pit of white supremacists. And RFK Jr is considered the black sheep of the Kennedy family with no possible redemption arc. Joe Rogan might as well be the third worst person on the planet right behind Trump and Vance.
Basically every other source is bad and there is no convincing them otherwise.
This is a text I nearly sent to a friend:
“The people that fall for authoritarian leadership styles have a tendency to divide the world into good and evil and are thus very ready to believe that there is valid and invalid opinions and facts. The truth is that all opinions are equally valid and facts can be easily evaluated if brought forward in good faith in full context. Screaming for a valid source is a rhetorical fog bomb, a tool, to discredit the opponent.
Declaring a source invalid is not a counter argument.
Very often good context does not exist in both left and right media. Both are flawed. It is our responsibility as citizens to evaluate both sides and derive what is correct or not. Do not fall into the trap of filtering the information you allow yourself to absorb based on a self inflicted censorship program where essentially you only allow the type of information in that confirms your already existing opinion.
Sadly, this time around there are far more dishonest and histrionic players on the left. Which makes it hard to find good information. In particular for me who has always voted green or left. I am finding that I have to leave old magazines and publications to the side in favor of new ones. I now see the bias in the material I was and am reading and am more willing to venture into various directions just to complete the picture I am being presented.
Most western countries are in decline. Germany for example has a very high crime rate and is in debt because of tax payer money funding foreign affairs and funding for mass immigration from very patriarchal societies who bring in misogyny and violence. We see it here starting too in Springfield Ohio and in Aurora Colorado. And in Maine. Wherever the immigration exceeds a tolerable level. As an immigrant myself I am in favor of immigration, but the people you let into a country need to be vetted and match the values the society is built upon. Otherwise you create conflict.
It does not even matter if it is illegal or legal immigration. Typically, the regime in power dictates what is legal or not, so that argument is null. You have to decide what type of immigration you want and what type of immigration you are willing to pay for both in cultural change and taxpayer money.
The point is the mass immigration from poor nations will force the labor and housing market into decline. And crime rate up. Demand for housing will increase and drive prices up and more supply in the labor market will drive labor rates down. Simple economical principles. The government can control this but that has consequences nobody should want to tolerate.
You have never competed on the open market. You are privileged thanks to your Dad giving you this job and giving you a house below market rent. In the open market you would get way less and probably not even qualify for renting a similar space.
Consequences of governmental intervention are severe. In a governmental-fixed housing market with limited living space available people will have to rent to those the government seems most deserving: likely a family with kids or other minorities. This was the way in Eastern Germany when it was under communist / socialist government. Every citizen got housing and a car based on their need status. Families with many kids always came first. My uncle and aunt had four kids and they still had to wait two years to get a car. But at least they got one.
A socialist government controls many aspects of a life. Forced abortions were for example a thing in China when every couple was only allowed to have one child. Even in the last trimester. Nobody cared if the child was viable. Be careful how you vote laws into existence what may serve you right under a government you like, may be abused by the next party in power. My body my choice is easily discarded when the government has a need for abusing a law. Think forced vaccinations. Think how many had to take vaccinations that were more harmful than good for them. We just saw that.
In North Korea and Venezuela people are starving. I am working with a man who left his manager job in Venezuela to start over here as a common worker, because he could no longer tolerate lack of food and safety for his kids. He does not like the current plan Kamala put forward and is hoping Americans vote for their best interest. As a non-citizen, he cannot vote.
Socialism is only good for the ruling class. Not one single country has ever seen anything different once communism moved in. The most infamous communist and socialist leaders like Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, and Che Guevara have high and brutal death counts, sometimes even higher than Hitler. And this is not saying Hitler is anything but an evil dictator. I am just saying both left and right have produced evil authoritarian dictators who killed anything and anyone in their way.
And just look at the current lobbying system. The food pyramid here in the US (or now My Plate) is a direct result of lobbying and promotes unhealthy eating habits. Dangerous chemicals are allowed in our food. Scientific studies are falsified. Like the harm of seed oils.”
I never sent this, because I got tired of arguing.
Good luck to you all this coming election and whatever aftermath you may be confronted with. I feel increasing loneliness as more and more of my friends seem to believe that anyone voting republican is voting for evil. I do not subscribe to this point of view.
Leaving you with this song:
They are not your friends if they think you are voting for evil. Why would you even associate with them if they truly believe you are voting for a Nazi? Find better friends and you will feel better and the loneliness will fade.
Great to hear an immigrant's musings.
